Get your nerd on

Marc was busy Sunday teaching a bunch of new cadets combat training all day, so Case and I earned some geek cred by checking out a Society for Creative Anachronism event at the park.

They let kids start to play at 7! Case looks ready to me.

Art

Case and I have been working hard since school got out, keeping busy every day with our fun tasks. He writes every day, despite not being that excited about it. I can't blame him though; he is not at a place where writing rewards him very much. He does love smile faces though, so we are building off that (we've branched out to pumpkins now!)

This picture comes from our chore chart-we earned a smile face for making cookies!Despite his complaints, he is getting better at the alphabet. He can do almost all the letters on command! Only the J, K, N and Y need help now (letters with dots next to them were assisted). I lovelovelove the "E"- I remember doing them the exact same way. We do try lots of different mediums to keep it interesting. Today we pulled out the watercolors. Actually painting wasn't half as interesting though,as changing the color of the water.

Berries

For months now we've been stalking the website of a u-pick farm near us, waiting for the announcement that blueberries were ready to be picked. Finally great news! Case and I drove there bright and early today to beat the heat (it was only 90!) and picked a half gallon of blueberries and blackberries in no time. Don't let these pictures give the false impression that he helped in any way. He did pick and eat a few though; more than the strawberry debacle.
It turns out that blueberries grow on adorable little bushes, without thorns or anything unpleasant. I can't figure out why anything ornamental is ever planted. If we owned our home, I would have torn out half our landscaping and replaced them with blueberries today.
Look at all those beautiful blackberries! We will definitely be back.
We've been tearing into them since we got home. Case likes blueberries best when I roll them across the table to him one at a time; with giggles he will eat a hundred of them. Heaven knows if we'll have any left over for something tasty tomorrow.

Nerd fun

Case and I played a game to practice a little math today. You write the numbers from 1 to 20then put your 20 sided dice in a cup to shakeshakeshake the hell out of it, making as much noise as possible. (Yep, Case's dice live in a tiny adorable Hurlburt Field recycling container).
After the die is sufficiently rattled you pour it out on the coffee table
then circle the matching number on your score card. After a while you will realize that 20 is a lot of numbers. Mommy will loose her turn just to move things along. Tiny M&Ms will be produced to reward persistence.
Eventually you will reach the point where the last 3 number will never ever be rolled. At that point, it is permissive to just pick up the die and find the lacking numbers. Tracing the numbers is good practice too!

Next time we might speed up the game by using more dice per roll, or use less numbers in the first place. But it definitely was fun!
